Crabeater Seal
Lobodon carcinophagus
|
|
Named by French explorers, crabeater seals prefer to eat a
shrimp-like animal called krill rather than crabs. Both males and females may reach up to
2.6 m and weigh up to 225 kg. |
| Crabeater seals live in and around the Antarctic. Many crabeater seals are scarred from leopard seals and to a lesser extent, killer whale attacks. Their unique teeth allow crabeater seals to strain krill out of seawater. | |
| Scientists consider crabeater seals to be the most abundant of any pinniped (seals, sea lions and walruses) species. Some estimates put their population at 70 million. | ![]() |
