A female beluga whale recently arrived at SeaWorld San Diego. Twenty-one-year-old Allua, which is Canadian Inuktitut for "bottom of the sea", was transported to SeaWorld as part of a long-term management plan. While the move is primarily considered a breeding loan, it also is an opportunity to enhance the social groupings of SeaWorld San Diego's male and two female belugas.
Allua, weighing in at 1,874 pounds and measuring 10 feet long, is in good health, and being cared for in a behind-the-scenes area at Wild Arctic. The animal care staff will carefully monitor and observe Allua to ensure she acclimates to her new surroundings. After an appropriate amount of time, she will be introduced to her new companions at Wild Arctic. |
