The first arrival of the year at SeaWorld San Antonio was an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, born January 4 at the San Antonio marine life adventure park.
Puka, the 23-year-old mother dolphin gave birth at approximately 7:00 a.m. The calf measures an estimated 3 feet long and weighs approximately 30 pounds. Both appear to be in good condition, said Dudley Wigdahl, vice president of the zoological department. The calf began nursing from its mother later in the day, a first sign of good health.
"Monitoring of mother and baby will continue 24 hours a day," he said. "The information we gather on bonding and nursing is important to continually improve the body of information we've gathered from numerous bottlenose dolphin births in our three SeaWorld parks."
The dolphin calf has not yet been named. |
