What’s
Happening in SeaWorld’s Gardens This Month?
Color,
of course, is an essential ingredient of the SeaWorld landscape
presentation. Hanging flower baskets play a key role in
meeting park color goals. Baskets brighten dining patios,
buildings and other areas throughout SeaWorld. All told,
there are over 155 hanging baskets in the park.
A
SeaWorld hanging basket consists of a moss-lined frame filled
with potting soil and packed with both flowering and foliage
plants. Most are made by Landscape Department team members.
Basket design options are limitless and certainly part of
the fun in working with these plantings is in creating new
arrangements. Baskets tend to be high maintenance items
requiring regular hand watering and fertilizer applications.
A hanging basket should last from 3-6 months before replacement.
Striking
hanging baskets bring color, accent and variety to the SeaWorld
landscape. On your next visit take a moment to appreciate
these role players in the park color parade.

Beneficial
Insects
What
are beneficial insects and why do we want them in our garden? We
consider an insect beneficial if it either devours the so called
"bad bugs" (the ones who destroy our plants) or if it pollinates
our plants. Who would imagine that cute little ladybug a predator!
Praying mantis, decollate snails, lacewings, green lynx spiders
are also among the “good bug” brigade. Some beneficials prey on
specific insects, while others are less selective. To encourage
beneficial insects in your garden refrain from spraying chemicals
and plant wildflowers as an attractant. For beneficials to survive
they need nectar, water and insects.
Take
time one day and observe the hidden life in your own backyard. Chances
are you already have a selection of beneficial insects roaming around.
So many of us are programmed to squash anything that resembles a
bug! That creepy little bug you are ready to squash just might be
your ally. Beneficial insects can help restore or create a natural
balance that will protect a garden in an eco-friendly way.
Many
farmers now use beneficial insects to help control damage to crops.
Here at Sea World we use ladybugs and decollate snails. Beneficial
insects can be purchased at many local nurseries. They can also
be ordered through the mail.

Weather
Report
June
is our most predictable month. Typically morning low clouds give
way to sunny pleasant afternoons. High temperatures are in the mid
70’s with overnight lows in the low 60’s. Any measurable rain is
a very remote possibility as our average rainfall for the month
is six one hundredths of an inch.

have updated our live weather link from SeaWorld’s Garden of Discovery:
