Greetings From SeaWorld’s Garden of Discovery

May 2002

What’s Happening in SeaWorld’s Gardens This Month?

SeaWorld is full of botanical treasures. Within the diverse landscape visitors find several specialized theme gardens. The range of park specialty gardens includes everything from a collection of threatened plants outside Manatee Rescue to a whimsical alphabet garden at Shamu’s Happy Harbor. These landscape areas provide an opportunity to both showcase specimens and create plantings that compliment an attraction.

Visitors at the Manatee Rescue exhibit experience a collection of threatened plants. Their plight is similar to that of the manatee. Shamu’s Happy Harbor features an alphabet theme garden. Youngsters find large colorful plants labels corresponding to each letter of the alphabet. A rock garden is located just east of the Skytower. This area features an assortment of plants that thrive in rocky soils.

The self-guided tour available at the Garden of Discovery gazebo provides locations and descriptions of many of the park theme gardens. On your next SeaWorld visit consider taking this botanical tour to discover the gardens within the SeaWorld garden.

Park theme gardens include the Happy Harbor alphabet garden and a collection of threatened species at Manatee Rescue.

Gardening With Children

A few reasons to garden with children:

  • To promote healthy eating – many children are surprisingly interested in trying vegetables from their own garden!
  • Quality family time – the whole family can be involved, even the toddlers and preschoolers. We all know how kids love digging and playing with water and dirt.
  • Excellent home schooling opportunity – gardening creates activities and lessons in language development, math, science, art, cooking and social development.
  • Teaches children to be responsible – each child in the family can have their own area to care for. Responsibilities might include: pulling weeds, watering, checking for pests, etc.
  • Can be very therapeutic – gardening creates a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Both children and adults can unwind from their day.
  • Career exploration – children may find they enjoy being outdoors or working with plants. Farming, landscaping and environmental work are just a few occupations that stem from gardening.
  • Birds, butterflies, bees and other insects can be studied – with a bit of research you can plant a flower garden that attracts specific species for observation and study.
  • Children spend less time in front of the TV – how often do parents say that’s enough television time? Well, there is always something to do in the garden.
  • Children learn patience and nurturing – children learn how to care for and appreciate living things.
