What’s Happening in SeaWorld’s Gardens This Month?

Just in time for Halloween a remarkable theme garden has been created at SeaWorld. In just 2 days a lawn area was transformed into an undersea coral reef complete with ferocious looking fish.

Undersea Garden

Work on this project began with our SeaWorld Landscapers building a small block wall and backfilling with 8 yards of soil. From this starting point, Jeff Moore of Solana Succulents in Solana Beach supplied the vision, design expertise and specialized plant material. Over 65 exotic succulents including Aloes, Euphorbias and Crassulas were planted amongst volcanic rocks capturing the essence of a coral reef. A rusty anchor and large plastic sea stars add to the ocean theme. For Halloween, large menacing fish have been placed throughout the garden. These colorful creatures are made of palm fronds and papier-mâché by Dan Townsand an artist in Encinitas.

The new Undersea Garden is located just south of the entrance to the Skyride. Although created for SeaWorld’s Terrors of the Deep Halloween program the garden is a permanent display. Stop by and checkout this fascinating and spooky place!

Green Thumb Award

A very special thanks to the Junior Master Gardeners, National Wildlife Federation, Lake Dixon Rangers, California Native Plant Society, Master Composters, Science Fair Winners and the San Diego Astronomy Association for making the educational activities so much fun. It was an exciting, busy day for the Garden of Discovery Staff and all of our partners. This event was yet another example that at SeaWorld learning and entertainment go hand in hand.

Weather Report

Visitors to San Diego often believe the city doesn’t have seasons. However, we do have all of the different seasonal conditions (except snow!) just in a random order. October is a good example of this phenomenon. On a given day we could have clear dry sunny Santa Ana conditions or a chance of showers from a northern storm. Regardless of the conditions, the moderating effects of the ocean ensures that SeaWorld will have mild temperatures.
