Greetings From SeaWorld’s Garden of Discovery

Happy New Year 2002

-------------------

What’s Happening in SeaWorld’s Gardens This Month?

With winter upon us several plants in the SeaWorld gardens enter dormancy. Daylilies, canna lilies and roses are all “resting” this month. Park visitors will find that the roses have been pruned back - a process referred to as “dormant pruning”.

Plants that flower this time of the year are greatly valued. Two noteworthy winter bloomers deserve recognition. Giant marigold Tagetes lemonnii, bloom periodically throughout the year. However, the heaviest flowering occurs in January. Look for this shrub, covered with yellow daisy flowers, along the south side of Pirates 4D Theater. Michelia doltsopa is a small tree that should blooms towards the end of the month. This magnolia relative features showy fragrant white flowers. These trees may be found in the Happy Harbor Café patio area.

As always, annual color has a prominent role in the SeaWorld landscape. Primrose, icleand poppies, pansies and violas are in bloom throughout the park.

Backyard Composting

Maintaining a backyard composting system is a must for every 2002 earth friendly gardener. Besides saving money, benefits of composting include reducing trash, conserving water and increasing plant health. January is a relatively slow month for weeding and pruning (except roses) so it’s a good time to clean up your yard and put waste where it belongs - in the compost bin!!!

Come visit the composting demonstration site at the Garden of Discovery. For complete composting information visit these websites:
