English Landing's mascot, Environmental Eagle,
made entirely from recycled materials
|
|
English
Landing is "soaring to new heights" with the environment
as its focus. When the school opened in 1993 with the help
of artist Holly Hughes, it promoted and completed a mural
of the school's mascot, Environmental Eagle. It is made entirely
from recycled materials. It has set the tone of environmental
awareness throughout the school.
The
staff at English Landing used grant money to set up an extra classroom called
"Discovery Place." Teachers bring their students to
Discovery Place to learn about science, math, social studies,
language arts, and environmental education.

Clubs
such as The Science Club, The Student Ambassadors, The "Chat
and Chew" Club, the "Friends of the Environment Club"
and the Recycling Club meet in the Discovery Place.
The
school participated in "Project Green Thumb" sponsored
by Speech teacher, Cheryl Silver. She made sure that every
one of the 480 students had a bulb to plant around the school.
She designed and prepared the lowerbeds with the help of parents,
students and community businesses. On the esignated Green Thumb
Day, each student planted a bulb and learned about the kind of flower that
would arise in its place in the spring. The campus was beautiful
as the brilliant colors arose!

Teachers and students working under Project Green
Thumb created planter beds at the school's back stairs.

Kindergarten
teacher Terri Stutz and second grade teacher Debbie Knudsen sponsored
the "Friends of the Environment" and Recycling Clubs. The school started
a recycling program in the 2000-2001 school year. Last year teacher
Terri Stutz participated in a program called Leadership in Environmental
Action Projects (LEAP). Six fifth grade students attended workshops
and visited a landfill. They came up with a project called "The Paper
Caper" for the school to improve the environment. The school district's assistant
superintendent, Dr. Dennis Fisher, wrote a grant to help the district
become environmentally aware. LEAP students prepared recycle bins, started
the recycling program and gained leadership and problem solving skills
while maintaining the recycling program. The company Bridging the Gap sponsors
the LEAP program. The students are so proud of their own goal to increase
awareness of paper waste, as well as to increase students' positive attitudes
and energy towards taking care of our environment.
The goal of the English Landing Outdoor Classroom Project was to create
an outdoor classroom and garden area to increase awareness and appreciation
for the environment, facilitate learning, experience gardening, and
to increase pride in the school. Silver again spent many hours organizing
and preparing the environment and the materials to go in the outdoor
classroom. A butterfly garden and bird feeders are reported to be
the next project on their minds. Teacher Stutz comments, "What
a life lesson! By taking on the responsibility of protecting, caring
and maintaining their own outdoor area, it is believed that our students
will become more aware of environmental issues and will make changes
in their lifestyles in order to live in greater harmony with our natural
environment."
