"Sea cows" are one of the most popular attractions at zoos and
in the wild, however, they are a species in danger of extinction. There
are many reasons for their low numbers, but by following a few simple tips,
you can help reduce manatee injuries that often lead to death.
| |
1. |
Observe
manatee speed zones when boating. |
| |
2. |
Throw
all fishing lines, nets, and garbage in the proper receptacles. |
| |
3. |
Always report an injured manatee to the proper officials. |
| |
4. |
Do
not disturb manatees in their natural habitats. View them in zoos
and aquariums, or from a distance in the wild. |
| |
5. |
Dispose
of pesticides, paints, oil, or household cleaners in the appropriate
places. Any chemical washed down a sewer or left to join with groundwater
runoff is potentially dangerous for the manatee as well as many other
species. |
