Gorillas

The eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) are large apes that mainly dwell in African tropical forests. Gorillas are the largest primates - with males attaining heights of about 5.6 ft. (1.7 m) and weights of 484 lb. (220 kg). Although they appear intimidating, gorillas are typically mild-mannered herbivores. In this issue of Land, Sea & Air, your students can dig deeper into the world of these gentle giants.

Animal Activities

Often people confuse an ape, like a gorilla, with a monkey. Students (grades K-3) can learn to distinguish the difference between the two main types of primates in the following coloring activity.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY: Color Me Ape-ish (K-3)

Students in grades 4 through 8 can construct a Primate Species Guide to discover more about this diverse group of mammals and then share their guide with other class members.

The Wild

How are gorillas perfectly adapted to their rainforest habitat? What sounds do gorillas use for communication with other gorillas. What is the conservation status of each gorilla subspecies? Discover the answers to these questions and more in the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens online Gorilla Infobook.

Currents

Unfortunately, gorilla populations have drastically declined in most regions that they inhabit. The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has provided grants to numerous projects involved in protecting gorillas and fostering future advocates through conservation education. Learn about a couple of recent projects at the following links.
