Biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals, and other life that occurs at all levels of biological organization including genetic diversity within a species, diversity of habitats within ecosystems, and even the variety of living organisms on Earth. From bees to bacteria to crocodiles to killer whales, more than thirteen million species inhabit the Earth, although only about 1.75 million are described. New species are discovered each year. Yet many species are disappearing at an alarming rate - at up to 1,000 times the natural rate. In this issue of Land, Sea & Air your class can explore the various scopes of biodiversity and discover why it is so vital for us to sustain the diversity of all life on Earth.
