During the holidays, many people travel to spend time with their families. Many kinds of animals also travel this time of year in lengthy migrations. In late fall, numerous bird and butterfly species migrate to overwinter in milder regions, and then fly back to food abundant regions in the spring. Along the Pacific Coast of North America, gray whales and humpback whales undertake biannual migrations between feeding grounds and breeding grounds thousands of miles apart. Although the status of the California gray whale has changed from "endangered" to "recovered" by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, migrating gray whales increasingly strand along the eastern Pacific coast. Find out more about a current study by the Wildlife Health Center at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to assess the nutritional condition of stranded gray whales, which was partially funded by a grant from the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. |
