Compost

When preparing to grow anything, usually some type of soil enrichment is necessary. A great source of organic matter for your garden is compost. Composting requires a combination of greens (such as lawn clippings), browns (such as dry fallen leaves and newspaper), and air. There are three primary methods of composting.

The first method is active. Results can be achieved in four to eight weeks. The mixture must be monitored and turned often to complete the composting process.

The second method is passive. With no fluffing or turning as with active composting, passive composting may take a year or more to achieve success.

The third method of composting utilizes vermiculture. This process uses worms to accelerate the composting process and takes about 12 weeks.

Virtually any garden can benefit from the addition of compost.
