The word bonsai comes
from the Chinese bon, meaning "a container" and sai, meaning
" to plant." From the beginning, a tree is grown in a particular style by
drastic pruning and wiring. Continual attention must be paid to pruning and trimming
otherwise bonsai loses its shape. Root pruning compensates for the drastic pruning in the
upper part of the plant, and encourages the growth of fine fibrous roots.
Bonsai stock can be obtained by cultivation from seeds or cuttings, by growing them
from offshoots or buying them from nurseries.
Many bonsai are small enough to hold comfortably in the palm of the hand. It is
possible to start with seedlings 3-5 cm tall, often found at the foot of large trees.
Spring is the best time of year to go looking for suitable plant material.
A tree or a grove of trees can be slowly shaped and developed in shallow decorative
container with rich moisture holding soil. Needle nosed pruners are used to judiciously
shape and prune ever so carefully. Rocks, moss and miniature garden ornaments can be added
to enhance and complete the landscape.
Many communities have a bonsai club or society, one should join if interested in
pursuing an in depth knowledge of Bonsai cultivation.
