Vocabulary
behavior the way an animal acts.
blowhole opening to the lungs of a whale, similar to human nostrils.
blubber a layer of fat just below the skin of some aquatic mammals.
calf the young of various animals (whale, walrus, cow, etc.).
camouflage coloration that blends in with the surrounding environment..
dolphin aquatic mammal with a blowhole, fin, flukes, and flippers.
dorsal fin the fin on a whale's back. Fin consist of dense, fibrous connective tissue, with no bones.
flippers the broad, flat forelimbs of whales. Flippers are supported by bones. They're used for steering and stopping.
flukes horizontal lobes of the tail of a whale, made of connective tissue (not bone). The flukes are used in an up and down motion for swimming.
pod a group of whales.
predator an animal that eats other animals.
prey an animal eaten by another animal.
reward a positive and desirable result of a behavior.
