American white pelican

Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

size:   wingspan of up to 2.8 m (9 ft.)

habitat:  open seawater, open freshwater, wet prairies and marshes, mangroves

diet:  fishes

status:  not threatened or endangered

key facts:  American white pelicans are flock-feeders; that is, they work together to increase their catch of fish. The pelicans form semicircles on the water surface to "herd" prey into more shallow waters, making the fish easier to catch.
