Ocean Words to Know

adaptation - a modification that makes an animal better suited to its environment.

Antarctic - the south polar region.

Arctic - the north polar region.

baleen - the fringed plates that grow from the upper jaw of baleen whales and filter food from the water.

blowhole - opening to the lungs of a whale, similar to human nostrils.

blubber - an insulating layer of fat just below the skin of penguins and most marine mammals.

endangered - threatened with extinction by human-made or natural changes in the environment.

flippers - broad flat limbs with bony supports, adapted for swimming.

flukes - horizontal lobes of the tail of a whale.

marine mammal - a mammal adapted to live in the marine environment and dependent on the ocean for food.

pod - a group of whales.

predator - an animal that eats other animals.

prey - an animal eaten by another animal.
