Like many other lizards, skinks can shed their tails when they're attacked. The young of some skinks have bright blue tails as a safety device. Whe attacked, the tail is broken off and as it's the most conspicuous thing in sight, the predator becomes confused and the skink can escape. The tail is only bright blue when young, except the blue-tailed skink which retains its blue tail for life.
