Dear Stacey, Thank you for writing with your questions about birds in Ohio. There are many species of birds that stay in Ohio over the winter, and other species that migrate south to join them from Canada. Many of them feed on insects and other animals, so their food supply is available all year, unlike birds who feed on plants which may die off in the winter. Some of the birds which live in Ohio year-round are the Northern cardinal, the ring-necked pheasant, the Cooper's hawk, the great horned owl, the black-capped chickadee, the downy woodpecker, and the Northern mockingbird. There is one endangered bird in Ohio: the piping plover. The American peregrine falcon, which is also endangered, may migrate through the area.
