To our knowledge, no recent species of whale or dolphin has become extinct. A possible exception is the Atlantic gray whale. Unfortunately, some, such as the North Atlantic right whale, the Chinese river dolphin and the Gulf of California harbor porpoise, are very close to extinction. A better question would be 'how many species are there? In fact, there may be as yet undiscovered species of whales and dolphins. Just a few years ago a new species of beaked whale was discovered in South America. Today we know of 77 species of whales and dolphins.
