In
September of 2001, The Illick's Mill Project began
as a senior class project. The group established
a goal to restore and protect the Monocacy Creek
watershed. The Monocacy Nature Center is surrounded
by twenty acres of riparian woodland in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. In the surrounding woodlands, a
wide variety of native fauna can be found. The
area is also known for an old abandoned grits
mill that was built back in 1856. In the near
future, this mill will be transformed into an
environmental learning center. Illick's Mill has
become an inspiration and source of pride for
the entire community.
Since
its inception, the students who attended Ms. Dolan's
"Illick's Mill Restoration Project"
class have raised an astounding $350,000 through
successful grant applications and by providing
professional presentations to future supporters.
The Liberty High School Seniors were also responsible
for organizing fundraisers, researching the natural
watershed, creating educational brochures, and
even archiving the Mill's 147 years of existence.
During the past two years, these amazing students
have also received public assistance by organizing
a large volunteer campaign. The citizens of Bethlehem
have been very eager to assist with the Illick's
Mill Restoration Project on many different levels.
Volunteers have been given the opportunity to
plant native plants on three stream banks as well
as conduct bird counts in conjunction with the
National Audubon Society.
Several
diverse organizations have partnered with the
project and provided services that will be instrumental
to the historical restoration of the Illick's
Mill. In the future, students will learn about
the natural environment through hands-on, experiential
opportunities. They will learn about exotic plants
by uprooting the invasive plants and replacing
them with native species. They will also actively
participate in the restoration of the local streambed.
"The Izaak Walton League stated, "The
Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) is proud
to support the educational and environmental activities
of The Illick's Mill Project. The League has long
endorsed stream projects that protect and enhance
water quality and habitat. This ambitious initiative
extends beyond that goal to incorporate students
in building community partnerships in order to
implement green technologies into historic preservation.
The project provides students with a practical
way to apply curriculum learning to inspire community
awareness for environmental issues and action.
The League looks forward to supporting these students
in completing their goals."
