A: Fish light up to lure prey, defend themselves and attract other fish. Latern-fishes live several hundred feet down but swim to the surface at night. Their bodies have patterns of light producing organs that light up as they swim. Caribbean flashlight fish use the beams of two powerful organs behind their eyes to blind their prey. They can flash these lights on and off. Not all species of deep water fishes have lights.
