Objective:
The student will be able to name at least five different species of tropical fish and to name some species of tropical fish that are most compatible together within an aquarium. (This site has many different options from which students can choose; it is impossible to visit the entire site in one lesson plan, so the teacher can schedule several different lesson plans on the Web site during the school year.)
Materials Needed:
Activity:
Have students work singly or in pairs for this lesson plan. After the students have connected to the Internet, give them Tetra's Web site address: www.tetra-fish.com
This Web site is very user-friendly; students can quickly read and follow the instructions on each page.
Once students have accessed the Web site, they should click on the Aquarium icon.
Then, click on the Virtual Aquarium icon.
Students will select an environment for the tropical fish in their Virtual Aquarium.
Then, they will select from one of three aquascapes for their Virtual Aquarium .
Students then select the Beginner experience level. As students get more experienced at aquarium ownership, they can visit Tetra's Web site again and select more advanced levels.
Students then select the tank size.
Now for the fun part! Students can select up to 12 different types of tropical fish to populate their Virtual Aquarium tank. If they need more details on each type of fish or would like to see what it looks like, they can click on the fish for a detail screen.
Once all the fish have been selected, students will see an information page about the Virtual Aquarium that they have created.
Students can view their Virtual Aquarium by clicking on the appropriate icon and waiting 5-10 minutes for it to appear on the screen.
Result:
Students can use the Virtual Aquarium lesson plan to "try out" different types of fish before they actually populate their real Aquademics aquarium. Also, they can access the Web site throughout the year to learn more about Tetra's aquarium products and to select different options as they become more experienced aquarium owners.
