An Imaginary Tropical Fish

Objective:

The student will be able to name at least three different fish mouth shapes and three different fish fin shapes by creating an imaginary tropical fish.

Materials Needed:

Activity:

The shape of a fish’s mouth and fins are good clues to where it lives and what it eats. This lesson gives students an opportunity to create a lifestyle for an imaginary tropical fish.

Distribute Aquademics™ Art Worksheet #3. Go over the pictures and explanations for types of fish mouths and fins. Remind students that fish are different because they have adapted to different lifestyles.

Tell students to pick a lifestyle for an imaginary fish, then use the mouth and fin shapes shown on Art Worksheet #3 to draw a fish that could survive in this environment. Encourage students to extend their illustration with a short story about their fish.

Result:

Invite students to share their imaginary fish and their story with the rest of the class. Perhaps some of the students with the best stories could read them during kindergarten storytime.
