Lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor) - Hand raised at the
SeaWorld San Diego Avian Center. Introduced to their exhibit November
2002. SeaWorld is one of the few North American zoological parks that
have successfully bred lesser flamingos.
The lesser flamingo is primarily an African species. Populations
are found in eastern, southwestern, and western Africa. Also, a sizable
population nests in India, and a few can be found as far north as
southern Spain. The lesser flamingo is the most numerous of all flamingo
species, with an estimated population of 6,000,000. The lesser flamingo
is the smallest flamingo, standing 80 cm (31.5 in.) and weighing only
2.5 kg (5.5 lb.).
