Great Ape Cam

Baby chimp

There’s a new addition at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay; an adorable chimpanzee born Sunday, July 23. Mom Patsy introduced the baby to the Myombe Reserve habitat Tuesday morning, making its first public appearance. This chimp, whose sex is yet undetermined, weighs about three pounds and is the first to be born at the park in nine years. According to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, there were only about a dozen chip births among all accredited AZA zoos in 1999. The rare birth of this endangered species is exciting news to the zoological community and has a positive impact on the family group of six chimps at Busch Gardens. The new baby diversifies the African adventure park’s group of chimps, adding a new dynamic to their social interactions and behaviors.
