Sacred
ibis live in large colonies near waterways throughout Africa. They
have curved, slender bills that they use to probe into shallow water,
mud or grass when foraging. Females lay up to 5 eggs; both parents
help care for the eggs and young. In ancient Egyptian societies,
the sacred ibis was worshipped as the god Thoth. The birds were
often mummified, then buried with pharaohs. Today, ibises are
still respected because they help control pests in agricultural crops.
