Careers in Aquatics

Objective:

The student will be able to identify and explain at least three different careers in aquatic or marine science.

Materials Needed:

Activity:

Refer to the section on Aquatic Careers.  Using this material as a resource, conduct a class brainstorming session to list as many possible careers in aquatic or marine science.  Be sure to name all levels of careers, not just jobs that require a doctoral degree.  For example, include the job of feeding the fish at a regional aquarium park as well as that of the scientist who is responsible conducting fish behavior experiments.  List all the careers on the board.

Ask each student to choose one of the careers on the list and to research it using the school library, an online encyclopedia and other available reference materials.  Give students a deadline to write a 250-word report called "A Day in the Life of a ____________."  Remind students to have their imaginary day start early in the morning and to talk about all the job duties that will keep them busy until time to go home in the evening.  Other points to add in the report might include:

  1. The educational requirements

  2. The location of the job

  3. The amount of travel required for the job

  4. The most exciting part of the job

  5. The most ordinary part of the job

  6. Why the student chose this particular career

The students could illustrate their report or find other ways to make it colorful and interesting.

If possible, invite someone with a career in aquatic or marine science to speak to the class.  Resources for speakers include a local science museum, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, a regional aquarium park, the county Department of Recreation & Parks or the local college/university.

Encourage students to conduct more in-depth research into marine science careers.  A bibliography of resources about careers is included here.  And, students can also find materials in their local library and on the Internet.

Result:

At the conclusion of the specified time period, ask students to share their reports with the class.
